DRAWING on the micro-scale

This 2 hour workshop provides teachers with a range of scientific and creative tools and resources to help students explore the microscopic worlds around them.

This teacher professional development workshop introduces a range of techniques and tools from Science and Art that can be used in Primary or Secondary school classrooms to observe and explore living creatures, structures & patterns in the microscopic worlds around us.

All workshops can be tailored to meet your classroom needs, including learning about:

  • scales of the microscopic world, taking on a visual journey from kilometres down to picometres

  • how to collect engaging samples* for microscopic observation

  • what types of microscopes to use (e.g. hand-held 60x microscopes vs 20x/40x stereo microscopes vs 400x/1000x digital microscopes)

  • the benefits of using drawing as a tool of observation alongside the microscope

  • other teaching tools (e.g. books, videos, websites) and activities to engage students in learning about the microscopic world

*Workshops can focus our observations and discussions on soil or water habitats if needed.
